Charge – while – driving

Consat Sustainable Energy Systems (SES) has performed a pre-study on “Charge – While –Driving”  during 2011. The concept shows great potential to be an efficient sustainable transport solution for most vehicle types. Consat SES has project managed the study, managed workshops, performed deeper technical studies and collected the results into informative reports.

The main problem to electrify the entire transport sector is the performance limits of the batteries. This is due to the problems from weight, packaging and last but not least economy, the cost of the batteries. By introducing a possibility to transmit power to the vehicles while running, one has the possibility to decrease the demand on the battery package power storage capability and to lower, perhaps eliminate the need to connect the vehicle to a recharging station, while still providing sufficient range for the vehicles to be used for normal driving.

During the study, technology for inductive and conductive power transmission has been evaluated, taking vehicles and infrastructure etc. in concern. The study recommends inductive power transmission, and a suitable technology for this is the “Primove” concept developed by Bombardier.

The study now continues and is applying for funds to examine the possibilities to design and build the first test and demonstration site in Europe. The concept will be to examine the possibility to build a public bus line in the center of a larger city.

The long term vision is to create an infrastructure that can be used by trucks, buses, cars etc. at the same time in order to share the costs.

Studies on this concept, applied on heavy transport vehicles, has also been financed by the Swedish board of energy “Energimyndigheten”. Consat SES has also been part of this in the “Electromobility forum 2011”.
